Snow Shoeing
Snow shoeing is an amazing and up-and-coming activity which allows you to tread deep into the virgin snow covered landscape of the Alps or Pyrenees without the expense or experience required for off-piste skiing. Wearing specially designed plastic 'raquettes' which spread your weight out over the snow you are able to explore a silent and majestic world of snow covered forests and frozen lakes.

We can offer tailor made snow shoeing holidays combined with low-level winter walking, visits to hot springs, local culture and food and an optional day's skiing.

Our snow shoeing courses are led by Indie Lyndale, an International Mountain Leader with many years experience of leading groups of all ages and abilities on snow shoeing trips.

Mas Forge

We are located in the lovely valley of Vernet le Bains at our centre, MAS FORGE, this is a beautifully renovated iron forge set on a hillside overlooking meadows and fruit orchards. The view of Le Canigou (2,700m) is magnificent and the mountain is often capped with snow until late spring.

The weather is almost always wonderful and even in Winter the sun shines more often than not. The photos on this page were all taken in February!

Mas Forge is always reserved for your group and there will never be anybody else staying there. The rooms are mostly doubles and twins and are an attracitve and comfortable Alpine style.

Morzine, French Alps

Mas Forge has been running for 20 years and has a friendly and informal atmosphere. There are pretty grounds to stroll around in or sit in the sun and enjoy the stunning views. In the summer months there is also a pool and jacuzzi. In the evenings we relax in the bar/lounge and games room.

Food

The food at Mas Forge is always fantastic. We know because we make it ourselves and we eat it all the time at home. It is always home made from fresh local ingredients where-ever possible and draws its inspiration from England and continental Europe. On tailor made holidays you can ask for meals from a specific nation or to eat Pyrenean/ Catalonian specialities. You can also request than one or more afternoons or evenings are dedicated to cookery classes where we all learn to cook a local (or not so local) speciality for our evening meal.

Snow Shoeing FAQ

What is Snow Shoeing Exactly?Snow shoes

Snow shoeing involves strapping plastic 'shoes' over your boots which spread your weight out over the snow allowing you to explore deep into the snowy mountains and forests.

How Fit Do I Need to Be?

We recommend snow shoeing for anyone who can walk comfortably for 5-6 hours in relatively rough terrain- such as moorland or low level mountains.

What is the Recommended Age Range?

We don't recommend it for the under 12s but don't have an upper age range as 'old age' is more mental than physical!

Where Do We Go?

Starting from our base at Mas Forge we drive to nearby locations which tend to be mountain paths during the summer from where we walk up into the mountains through forests and towards frozen lakes and peaks.
